Dehradun: Prior to the commencement of the two-day session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, Umesh Kumar, an independent MLA from the Khanpur assembly constituency in Haridwar, announced his decision to resign from his membership. Umesh Kumar said that the opposition did not support him in raising public issues, which is why he is stepping down. He further declared that he is neither joining the Congress nor the BJP. Umesh Kumar said that he cannot join Congress or BJP and cheer for people who, until yesterday, used to come and sit at his doorstep.
He said, “I am deeply disappointed. I am hurt and distressed. We are unable to even fight for the issues of the district we belong to inside the House. Our fellow MLAs are not standing alongside us in this fight. For the past four and a half years, I looked towards the opposition with hopeful eyes, expecting them to support me on issues of corruption, as well as public and farmers’ issues, but the opposition did not support us either. Now, it has come to a point where I have to fight alone. Therefore, I will resign from assembly membership on Wednesday.”
