Max Hospital, Dehradun, Successfully Replants 23-year-old boy’s Severed Leg Following Major Industrial Accident.

Dehradun: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, successfully performed a complex limb replantation surgery on a 23-year-old man whose right-side foot and leg were completely severed in an industrial accident following a fall on an excavator’s conveyor belt.

The patient, a resident of Uttarakhand, was initially taken to a nearby healthcare facility for immediate first aid treatment before being referred to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, for specialised trauma care. He arrived in a critical condition with severe blood loss and a completely amputated right lower limb, which was brought in a box covered with ice packs.

The patient was immediately stabilised by the Emergency team, following which a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Chisel Bhatia, Consultant – Department of Aesthetic along with Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement team, at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, stepped in to perform the complex limb replantation procedure. The nearly eight-hour surgery involved meticulous repair of the damaged bones, blood vessels, tendons, and soft tissues to restore the amputated limb.

Following the surgery, the patient was closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His treatment journey included wound management and skin grafting procedures to promote healing and preserve the viability of the replanted limb. After a 14-day hospital stay, the patient was discharged in a stable condition with a viable leg and foot. He will continue to undergo regular follow-ups and additional reconstructive procedures as part of his rehabilitation and recovery.

Dr. Chisel Bhatia, Consultant – Department of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, stated, “This was an extremely challenging case requiring advanced microsurgical skills and timely intervention by a plastic surgeon. The success of limb replantation extends beyond the operating room. It requires meticulous post-operative care, close monitoring of tissue viability, and staged reconstructive procedures to support healing and recovery. While the journey to functional rehabilitation is gradual, preserving the patient’s own limb offers significant physical and psychological benefits, particularly for young individuals with traumatic injuries. Such cases highlight the advances and importance of modern plastic and reconstructive surgery.”

The successful management of this complex case highlights Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun’s expertise in handling severe trauma through a multidisciplinary approach, combining advanced orthopaedic, reconstructive, and critical care services to deliver comprehensive patient care.
