Uttarkashi: Out of the five municipal seats in the district Uttarkashi, the chairperson’s position is witnessing a triangular contest in two seats. One of these is the most prominent and “hot” municipal seat, Badahat (Uttarkashi), located at the district headquarters. After the disqualification of one candidate, three contestants remain in the fray. The second seat in focus is Chinyalisaur. The presence of independent candidates in both contests has added to the concerns of the major political parties, BJP and Congress.

The Badahat Municipal seat, located at the district headquarters, has emerged as the most high-profile municipal seat not just in the district but across the state. The primary reason for this is the candidacy of Kishore Bhatt, the Chief Minister’s Garhwal Coordinator, who is contesting from this seat. Former municipal chairperson Bhupendra Chauhan, dissatisfied with being denied a ticket, has filed his nomination as an independent candidate. On the other hand, Congress has fielded former city president Dinesh Gaur as its candidate. The BSP had nominated Ramesh Raj as its candidate, but his nomination was disqualified due to a lack of proof of reservation eligibility for the OBC-reserved seat. Consequently, the contest on this seat is now between BJP, Congress, and an independent candidate.

Chinyalisaur is also witnessing a triangular contest. Here, the BJP has fielded Jeetlal, while Congress has nominated Darshan Lal. Additionally, Manoj Kohli is contesting as an independent candidate. It remains to be seen whom the public will bless in these closely contested seats.
