Uttarkashi: In the border district of Uttarkashi, the issue of the mosque has been heated for several days. There is also a raging debate on social media regarding the legality or illegality of the mosque. This issue in Uttarkashi has once again flared up. A group from one community has called for a rally in the city on October 24, claiming that the mosque is illegal. On the other hand, another community has submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate (DM), demanding that the rally be stopped. They claim that they have already provided all relevant documents regarding the mosque to the district administration and are seeking protection for both the mosque and their community members.
Earlier, the legality of the mosque, located at the district headquarters, had been questioned, and organizations from one community had sought information about it through an RTI. Initially, incomplete information was provided, indicating that there were no records available related to the mosque. However, later on, all necessary information was made available, confirming the mosque’s legality.
Meanwhile, members of the other community had also submitted documents, including the land registry, property records, and papers related to the Sunni Waqf Board, to the District Magistrate, Dr. Mehraban Singh Bisht, which had resolved the controversy at the time. But now, one community has once again raised questions about the mosque’s legality and announced a rally on October 24.
On Friday, the other community submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, claiming that misinformation about their religious site was being spread on social media. Irshad Qureshi, Nasir Sheikh, and Waqar Ansari, among others, stated that they have already provided factual and complete documents related to the mosque’s land ownership, and questioned why the mosque is still being labeled as illegal. They also expressed concern that the rally is creating an atmosphere of fear within their community.
