Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun Raises Awareness on Monsoon Diseases

Saharanpur:  As the monsoon season sets in, bringing much-needed respite from the summer heat, it also ushers in a heightened risk of seasonal illnesses, particularly mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. In response to the rising health concerns during this time, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun, organised a dedicated awareness campaign to educate the public about the prevention, symptoms, and timely treatment of monsoon-related diseases.

Dr. Divya Garg, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, emphasized upon raising awareness about these diseases and its symptoms, and explained, “Dengue is a viral infection spread by the Aedes mosquito, which usually bites during the day. Whereas, Malaria is spread through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito, which is more active at night. If left untreated, both diseases can become severe. Common symptoms include fever, headache, body pain, chills, skin rashes, vomiting, and tiredness, which should not be avoided during this season.”

Further, Dr Garg added, “Early diagnosis and timely treatment play a crucial role in controlling the severity of these diseases. In the case of dengue, there is no specific antiviral medication, so treatment is focused on supportive care, which includes proper hydration, rest, and regular monitoring of platelet counts. In more severe cases, hospitalization may be required to provide intravenous fluids or blood transfusions.”

Dr. Garg highlighted that during the monsoon, stagnant water becomes a common problem, providing ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Open containers such as coolers, flower pots, tires, and rooftop drums are common spots where mosquitoes lay eggs. Hence, it is crucial to regularly clean these areas and prevent water accumulation. To protect against infection, people are advised to use mosquito nets, wear full-sleeve clothing, and maintain cleanliness in and around their homes.
