Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun Raises Awareness on World Hepatitis Day.

Dehradun: On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun organised a special public awareness campaign aimed at educating people about Hepatitis – a serious and potentially life-threatening disease. This initiative campaign focuses on providing detailed information about the symptoms, causes, treatment, and prevention of hepatitis.

World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 to raise global awareness about viral hepatitis types A, B, C, D, and E, which can lead to severe liver damage and in many cases, prove fatal. Chronic Hepatitis B and C, in particular, pose the highest risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer if not diagnosed and treated early.

Dr. Mayank Gupta, Principal Consultant, Gastroenterology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, stated that “The biggest challenge with hepatitis is that its early symptoms are often mild or even invisible. However, signs such as fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), dark-colored urine, and pale stools should not be ignored. “He further explained that “Hepatitis A and E are usually self-limiting and can be managed with supportive care, whereas Hepatitis B and C can become chronic and may require specific antiviral medications and long-term monitoring. In advanced cases, a liver transplant may be necessary.”

Dr. Gupta emphasized on the main cause and the importance of vaccinations of Hepatitis saying, “The main causes of hepatitis transmission include unsafe blood transfusions, unprotected sexual contact, consumption of contaminated food and water, reuse of needles or razors, and poor hygiene practices. He said that with the right information and public awareness, the disease is largely preventable. Safe and effective vaccines are available for Hepatitis A and B In addition, consuming hygienic food and clean water, maintaining personal hygiene, practicing safe sex, and regular health check-ups are critical in preventing hepatitis.”

Dr. Gupta, further added, “We should treat World Hepatitis Day as an opportunity to protect ourselves and society from this silent but dangerous disease. Timely screening, appropriate treatment, and spreading awareness can help us eliminate hepatitis from its root.”

Early detection, timely intervention, and greater awareness about hepatitis and liver diseases can significantly reduce the burden of chronic liver conditions.
