Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, Expands Renal Transplant Capabilities with Successful ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplant

Dehradun: Advancing access to high-end renal transplant services in Uttarakhand, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, has successfully conducted an ABO-incompatible kidney transplant—an advanced procedure that allows transplantation across blood groups. The achievement is expected to significantly benefit patients who struggle to find a compatible blood-group-matched donor within their family.

The recipient, 24-year-old Aditi, a student and resident of Dehradun, had been suffering from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) for the past two years and was dependent on long-term maintenance haemodialysis after her kidneys failed. Her mother, 52-year-old Sunita, stepped forward as a willing donor, but the mismatch in their blood groups meant a traditional transplant was not possible. Through advanced transplant techniques now available at Max Hospital, Dehradun, Sunita was able to donate her kidney, enabling her daughter to undergo a life-saving transplant.

Addressing the significance of this advancement, Dr. Puneet Arora, Associate Director – Nephrology and Kidney TransplantMax Hospital, Dehradun, said, “The demand for kidneys far outweighs the supply, and many patients lose hope because a blood-group-matched donor is not available. ABO-incompatible transplantation is a validated and successful technique, but only select centers in India have the infrastructure and expertise to perform it safely. With this capability now available in Dehradun, patients no longer need to rely solely on blood group compatibility when a willing donor is present in the family. It opens a new path to transplantation and a new lease on life.”

The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. Arora, supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Manish Sharma – Consultant (Nephrology), Dr. Deepak Garg – Senior Consultant (Urology and Kidney Transplant), and Dr. Tarique Naseem – Principal Consultant (Urology and Kidney Transplant), along with dedicated anaesthesia and critical care specialists.

Following the transplant, Aditi was closely monitored in a specialized Intensive Care Unit, where her condition remained stable with progressive improvement in renal function, enabling her discharge in satisfactory health. The donor, Sunita, also recovered well post-surgery.

With this successful ABO-incompatible transplant, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, strengthens its role as a comprehensive renal care provider capable of advanced, high-risk procedures previously accessible mainly in metropolitan centers.
