Max Hospital, Dehradun, Spreads Awareness on World COPD Day.

Dehradun: On the occasion of World COPD Day, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, today organised an awareness initiative to educate people and highlight about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a serious but preventable lung condition that makes it hard to breathe and affects millions worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Breathing is Life – Act Earlier,” focuses on the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and healthy lifestyle habits to prevent and manage COPD effectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vaibhav Chachra, Principal Consultant – Pulmonology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, said, “COPD develops gradually, often due to smoking, air pollution, or long-term exposure to dust and fumes. Many people ignore early symptoms such as constant cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath, assuming they are minor issues. Recognising these warning signs timely and consulting a specialist early can help prevent further lung damage and improve quality of life.”

COPD cases tend to rise across North India, especially during the winter months when air pollution levels are at their highest. Poor air quality, exposure to smoke, and frequent respiratory infections make breathing more difficult for those with existing lung conditions. These trends highlight the urgent need for people to be more aware of lung health and to go for regular check-ups and early screening to detect any breathing issues in time.

Dr. Chachra, further added, “The best way to prevent COPD is to quit smoking, avoid polluted or smoky environments, eat a balanced diet, and stay physically active. Simple steps like using masks in dusty areas, getting flu and pneumonia vaccines, and following medical advice can make breathing easier and keep lungs healthy. With the right care and rehabilitation, COPD patients can lead full and active lives.”

Max Hospital, Dehradun, continues to promote lung health through awareness campaigns, lung function tests, and advanced respiratory care facilities. The hospital encourages everyone, especially smokers and individuals exposed to pollution or dust at work, to prioritise lung check-ups and seek timely medical help if they experience breathing difficulties.
