Dr. Preeti Sharma, Director, Department of Cardiac Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, highlighted that “Individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop hypertension. Elevated blood sugar levels already strain the blood vessels, and if high blood pressure is also present, it can accelerate vascular damage, severely affecting the eyes, kidneys, and nervous system. She also emphasized that hypertension poses serious risks to people with heart conditions. It puts added pressure on the heart, leading to thickening of the heart muscles and decreased cardiac efficiency. This may result in severe complications such as heart attacks, heart failure, or stroke. If someone already has a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure can significantly worsen their health”.

Prolonged high blood pressure can also constrict the blood vessels in the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney failure. In patients with diabetic retinopathy, uncontrolled BP may cause permanent vision loss. Additionally, excessively high BP can lead to the rupture or blockage of blood vessels in the brain, triggering strokes. To prevent such life-threatening conditions, patients are advised to regularly monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, follow a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, manage stress, and adhere to prescribed medication routines. Limiting salt and sugar intake is also crucial for long-term health.”

In conclusion, Dr. Sharma stated, “For individuals with diabetes or heart disease, keeping blood pressure under control is not just important—it can save lives. Early awareness and consistent management are the keys to a healthier future.”
