Dr. Ashish Mittal, Director, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital Dehradun, emphasized the critical need for tailored exercise for the elderly. “As we age, it’s vital to focus on low-impact exercises such as swimming, yoga, and light stretching to maintain joint flexibility and prevent stiffness. Regular movement helps reduce inflammation and keeps the muscles around the joints strong, which in turn, protects the joints from wear and tear. Even just 20-30 minutes of gentle activity daily can significantly improve mobility and reduce joint pain in older adults.”

Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Director, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital Dehradun, discussed the importance of nutrition for seniors to support bone health and said, “Older adults are particularly vulnerable to bone density loss, making a diet rich in calcium, Vitamin D, and magnesium essential. I recommend foods like fortified cereals, dairy, and green vegetables, but sometimes supplements are necessary if dietary intake is insufficient. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight is crucial, as extra body weight can significantly stress aging joints, leading to pain and degeneration.”
