The Indian Naval Hydrographic Department (INHD) is a direct descendant of the Marine Survey of India established in 1874 at Kolkata. Hydrographic surveying activities in the Indian waters can be traced back to 1770, when regular surveys were undertaken of the subcontinent towards documenting data of these areas. The present Office at Dehradun was established in June 1954 and named as the Naval Hydrographic Office. Since then, the Department has relentlessly pursued its vision and advancements in the field of Hydrography keeping pace with the changing trends in modern technology. In 1997, the Office was rechristened as National Hydrographic Office in recognition of its national mandate and international stature.
