Dehradun– In a remarkable medical feat, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun successfully performed Cochlear Implant Surgery on a 2.8-year-old baby boy who was deaf since birth. The implant surgery was led by Dr. Iram Khan, Consultant ENT, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Iram Khan, Consultant ENT, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, said, “When the child was brought to us on December 2024, diagnosis revealed that the child’s cochlea (inner ear) was anomalous. This anomaly occurs intrauterine when the embryo is formed. The anomaly included absent semicircular canals, and hence there was a risk of facial nerve injury during the procedure. A cochlear implant should ideally be performed before the age of 5 years, as the auditory part of the brain develops within this age. For the surgery, we made a small incision behind the ear to place the implant. After the procedure, the child underwent speech therapy and auditory training to help him adapt to the new hearing system, recognize sounds, and develop speech skills.”
Further, Dr. Iram Khan added, “A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that bypasses damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, allowing individuals with severe hearing loss to perceive sound. The procedure offers an effective alternative for patients who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids, making a meaningful impact on their ability to communicate and engage with the world around them.”
