Max Hospital, Dehradun, Restores Mobility for 61-Year-Old Using Advanced Joint Replacement Surgery.

Dehradun: Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, successfully treated a 61-year-old patient suffering from severe bilateral knee arthritis, helping him regain mobility and return to a more active, pain-free life through advanced robotic joint replacement and preservation surgery.

The patient, Mr. SC Garg, had been experiencing persistent pain in both knees for several months. Simple activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and carrying out a daily routine had become increasingly difficult. Over time, the discomfort progressed to stiffness, visible deformity, and restricted movement, significantly affecting his independence and overall quality of life.

A detailed examination at Max Hospital, Dehradun, showed arthritis affecting the front part of the left knee and severe wear-and-tear arthritis in the right knee. After careful assessment and discussion with the patient regarding treatment options, the orthopedic team, led by Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Director- Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement,  along with  Dr. Shubham Aggarwal , Consultant Orthopaedics  Max Hospital, Dehradun suggested a tailored surgical plan to address the specific condition of each knee.

The team performed a robotic patellofemoral (partial knee) replacement on the left knee and a robotic total knee replacement on the right knee. This was the first robotic patellofemoral replacement of north india and second of india. The approach was planned to relieve pain, correct deformity, and restore joint function while ensuring optimal recovery and preserving joint in the less involved knee.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Gaurav Gupta said, “Knee arthritis can severely impact a person’s ability to perform even basic daily activities. Our primary goal is to relieve pain and help patients regain confidence in movement. With a personalized surgical plan and structured rehabilitation, most patients can return to an active and independent lifestyle.”

He said that we have been performing partial and total knee replacements since years in uttarakhand. With new robotic advancements, there are options of joint preservation in high demand and young patients. New technology is helping us to preserve joints and replace only the affected part(partial knee replacement) with more accuracy and precision, thereby preserving the unaffected part benefiting the patient. The newer robotic technologies that provided more knee preservation options to the patient.

He further emphasized the importance of timely consultation. “Persistent knee pain that does not improve with medication, physiotherapy, or lifestyle modifications should not be ignored. Early intervention can prevent further joint damage and improve long-term outcomes,” he added.

The surgery was completed successfully under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. The patient’s hospital stay remained smooth and uneventful. Post-surgery, he was mobilised with walker support and guided through a structured physiotherapy programme. He was discharged in stable condition with continued rehabilitation advice and follow-up plans.

Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun, remains committed to delivering comprehensive, patient-focused orthopaedic care with an emphasis on early diagnosis, personalised treatment, and holistic rehabilitation to help individuals regain mobility and improve their quality of life.
