5 days Training programme on Environmental Impact inaugurated at ICFRE, Dehradun  

Dehradun: A five days Training programme on Environmental Impact Assessment – Evidence Based Decision Making under ‘National Programme for Training of Scientists & Technologists working in Government Sector sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) commenced at the Indian Council of Forestry, Research & Education (ICFRE), Dehradun on 06.10.2025 being organized by the Environment Management Division, Directorate of Extension, ICFRE.

Scientists, Technologists and Officers from the states of Maharashtra, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, New Delhi and Uttarakhand are participating in the said training programme. Participants belong to various government organizations namely Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) Institutes, Botanical Survey of India and its centres, Western Coalfields Limited, South Eastern Coalfields Limited, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Central Silk Board, Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) etc. Brief Introduction to the training was provided by Course Director and ADG (EM), ICFRE, Dr. A. N. Singh, and vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Vishavjit Kumar, Senior Scientist from the ICFRE. The Inaugural session was hosted by Sh. Ajin Sekhar, Scientist from the ICFRE.

The event was inaugurated by the Smt. Kanchan Devi, IFS, Director General, ICFRE, Dehradun. In her inaugural address, she underlined the necessity of development while highlighting the critical importance of safeguarding the environment. Additionally, she called for the meticulous execution of mitigation measures to counteract the associated adverse impacts of development while also emphasising on national commitments and sustainability goals.

Dr. Sudhir Kumar, Deputy Director General (Extn.), ICFRE, Dehradun in his speech highlighted the long standing expertises of the council in the domain of environment management including eco-restoration and carrying capacity studies. He also apprised the trainees about the role of ICFRE and its institutes in imparting training and capacity building on multiple thrust areas and themes of different stakeholders across the country.

After the inaugural session, technical sessions covering various aspects related to the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) – Evidence Based Decision Making are scheduled to be held. This will include processes of physical, biological and social environment assessment, impact prediction and environment management planning, environment impact assessment-based decision making for according clearance by the regulatory agencies and mechanism of post-clearance compliance monitoring of the developmental projects.

Apart from various technical sessions, field visits/demonstrations related to the topics are also slated to be covered. Eminent subject matter experts from ICFRE, MoEF&CC, WII and ICAR-CICFR will be delivering their lectures on respective topics. The week-long training is scheduled to end on 10th October, 2025 with valedictory session and distribution of certificates to the participants of the training.
