Dehradun : Doctors at Max Super SpecialtyHospital, Dehradun, have successfully performed a highly complex bariatric surgery on a 41-year-old woman weighing 190 kg, who had been battling severe obesity since her teenage years. The case was led by Dr. Vishal Nidhi Kulshreshtha, Associate Director – GI, MAS & Bariatric Surgery, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun
The patient, Kusum (name changed), presented at Max Hospital, Dehradun, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 69, more than twice the recommended limit of 32.5 for bariatric surgery, she was classified as “super obese.” She was suffering from sleep apnea and was at high risk of developing other health complications. Post thorough evaluation, Kusum opted for an advanced bariatric surgery.
Explaining the case Dr. Vishal Nidhi Kulshreshtha, said, “Kusum had been struggling with obesity since a young age and also had a family history, her mother had previously undergone similar bariatric surgery. The case was challenging, particularly due to her significantly enlarged liver, which made the surgery complex. We opted for Laparoscopic one anastomosis gastric bypass, also known as mini gastric bypass. It involves creating a long, narrow stomach pouch and connecting it to a loop of the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine. This restricts food intake, leading to weight loss. The surgery lasted nearly six hours. Third day post-operative, we discharged her in stable condition.”
Dr. Kulshreshtha further said, “Her recovery has been impressive, with nearly 10 kg of weight loss in just the first week. We are anticipating her weight will drop below 80 kg within six months. Bariatric surgery is not merely a weight-loss tool; it is a metabolic intervention. reducing stomach size and bypassing a part of the intestine limits food intake and nutrient absorption. Long-term success depends on following a strict bariatric diet and adopting a healthier lifestyle”.
Obesity is often linked to unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. Indian diets, high in carbohydrates and low in protein, contribute to weight gain, creating a cycle of inactivity, stress, and emotional eating. Bariatric surgery offers one of the safest and most effective ways to break this cycle and reclaim a healthy life.
Max Hospital, Dehradun, has also successfully performed this bariatric surgery using advanced robotic techniques in six patients, further enhancing precision and patient outcomes.
